Sociology: systematic study of social interaction at a variety of levels. Sociological imagination: ability to see the connection between individual lives and larger social influences, helps us see how society shapes us as individuals, example: the sport you like has to do with where you come from. Two separate lenses used to look at society: macro prospective, study of large scale groups organizations or social systems, examples: religion, society, country, micro prospective, study of human behavior in contexts of face to face interaction, individual. How could these situations be a micro or macro: divorce, could be a macro issue because of the economy, micro because of personal issues, unemployment, macro because the economy, micro because of personal issues. Origins: theory----> statements that explains why phenomenon occurs. Aguste comte: the father of sociology , believed that the study of sociology should be backed up with observable data not just stereotypes. Emile durkheim: social facts, social solidarity, division of labor.
