Document Summary

How to asses for ld: iq achievement discrepancy, below average achievement: grade or age. *both of these approaches have been criticized- because iq test rely a lot on verbal ability, and they don"t account for poor instructions. Speech sound disorder: fail to display developmentally appropriate and dialect-appropriate speech sounds, development of speech sounds is similar to typical children but is delayed, may involve deficits of motor control, may also experience problems understanding sounds. Epidemiology and course: 3-7% of children have language disability, more prevalent in boys, usually appears by 3-4 years old, improvement can happen over time. Co-occurring problems: poor academic performance, future learning disabilities, both internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, nonlinguistic cognitive deficits- speed of information processing, auditory perception, memory. Treating language disabilities: clinician and parent directed therapy have been effective, the longer the duration of therapy, the better, the use of operant procedures and modeling are widely used, little evidence for receptive language therapies.
