Today"s field of language and lds can be traced to interest in individuals who exhibited discrepant abilities and to advocacy to improve services to them. Kirk"s 1963 definition of lds was a milestone for the disciplinary field as we know it today. The influential definition of specific learning disabilities offered by the federal government has been criticized and led to variation in how specific disabilities are defined and identified. Specific disorders have usually been identified by an iq achievement discrepancy or discrepancy between a youth"s achievement and what would be expected based on age or grade level. Criticism of the iq achievement discrepancy approach has weakened it somewhat but iq is still often considered during diagnosis. Response to intervention is a newly developing multi-level approach to identifying disabilities and/or preventing them. Specific language disorders include phonological, expressive and recessive- expressive disorders.
