Document Summary

Distinguish thoroughly between an addiction and a habit. Chapter 6: an addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance, despite ongoing negative consequences. Addictive behaviors initially provide a sense of pleasure or stability that is beyond the addict"s power to achieve in other ways. With addiction, repetition occurs by compulsions, with considerable discomfort if the behavior is not performed: a habit is a repeated behavior in which the repetition may be unconscious. Inhalation: drug enters the body through the respiratory tract by sniffing, smoking or inhaling and drugs that are absorbed by the lungs travel the quickest. Injection: drug is injected intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously. Intravenous injection is the most common in drug users because it is intravenously, however it also carries the most risk because it is injected directly into the vein and can cause damage to the blood vessel.
