Document Summary

The permeability of a red blood cell related to its molecular weight. Hemolysis is when a red blood cell is put into a hypotonic solution and the cell swells and ruptures. The goal of this experiment to is to study the permeability of red blood cells to a specific substance by placing blood into a solution of the substance and record the time required to reach hemolysis. When hemolysis occurs it causes the cells to rupture releasing hemoglobin causing the solution to become clear. To determine the permeability of red blood cells glycol series was used. Ten test tubes where labeled for replicates using the test solutions. Tube 10 was used as a practice tube. The diethylene glycol solution was used for practice. 4ml of the test solution was pipette into the appropriate test tube. 12ml of the bovine blood solution was obtained.
