Document Summary

Hemolysis rate of ovine red blood cells when placed in solutions with. To determine the rate of hemolysis, we placed solution in front of a slit lamp, and recorded the amount of time that passed from when the solutions were mixed to when the thread on the slit lamp became visible. When the thread became visible, it was an indication that about 75% of the cells had hemolyzed. The plasma membrane is what controls everything that enters and exits the cell. In the glycol solutions with 1,2, and 3 hydroxyl groups, the size, shape, and polarity is different for each. When there are more hydroxyl groups, the molecule is larger, it has a greater molecular weight, and it becomes more polar. The mammalian red blood cell is a membrane-bound, circular, biconcave disk that has no nucleus. The disk shape of the rbc permits rapid gas exchange to support the oxygen and carbon dioxide carrying capacity of the blood.
