Northern democrats, mostly white, tend to be conservative. Republicans who tended to be more moderate. Radicals who are more willing to try for equality. African americans both in the north and the south. Presidential reconstruction (1865 - 1866): the failure of self-reconstruction. Didn"t ask much of the white south. He is making reconstruction plans while the war is going on. Moving towards some version of suffrage for blacks. Pass the 13th amendment, which makes slavery illegal. Amendment still needs to be ratified by states. A gov agency that aids the transition of former slaves into freedom. Sets up schools to teach blacks to read and write. Confiscated land of southerners who were in the confederacy. Lincoln gets assassinated and the next president is andrew johnson. He was part of the union because he was a poor white who hated slave owners. He appointed white southerners to be governors of each state. Calls convention to create new state constitution.
