Major themes of the course: change over time and consistencies over time. Changes from 1800s to 1910-20s to present day. Begins around the end of the civil war (april 1865) Is a period of (era) of rebuilding the nation after the civil war. When talking about reconstruction, it is important to think about how things looked to different people in different areas of the nation at the time. Ex: how things looked to white southerners as opposed to former slaves (very different viewpoints of what is happening) Also important to know that reconstruction changes over time. Have to figure out how to get back the 11 states that succeeded from the. Once the nation is reunited, what will the roles of federal and state gov be like. Questions of how destroyed the south actually was. Northern democrats, mostly white, tend to be conservative. Republicans who tended to be more moderate. Radicals who are more willing to try for equality.
