Discourse structures the way society functions and thinks. The use of discourse i inherently innocent because it is simply a method of communication. However, what composes the discourse the language, images, and ideas, originate from a particular source and carry biases. This source is the people who hold power. According to foucault the people who hold power an mold and enforce discourse and as such manipulate society and create what he call a regime of truth. During this same time the age of exploration began. Originally driven by christendom values it evolved during the enlightenment period into one fueled by capitalistic interests. Also during the enlightenment period the term the west evolved and began to be associated with modernity, capitalism, secularism, urbanization, civility, and rationalism.
