Document Summary

Racial categories came from split between the east and the west. The west, like race, is discourse, not fact. Maps are discourse: depend on point of view, time period, etc, ex: mercator projector 1569. Even like this today: different perspectives place different nations at the center of the world. Stuart hall (1932-2014: jamaican, educated in england, sociologist, cultural theorist, godfather of multiculturalism , social inequalities are caused by discourse. What is discourse: michel foucault, statements representing knowledge, knowledge one way, but not other ways, discourse in all of society/social practices, use discourse, inside of it. What does discourse do: classification, set of images. How things are/should be: comparisons, criteria for evaluation, discourse does not disappear. It has been proven that race is not a biological fact, but that does not mean discourse about it no longer exists: regime of truth: successful in producing power relations. Those who produce discourse can make it true.
