This course introduces you to the basic concepts of linguistics (the formal study of language), and subtopics of language study including: acquisition, neural mechanisms and disorders, writing, sign language, and history. After exploring theories of language origin and distinguishing language and communication, we will delve into the structure of language - the phonology, morphology, and syntax. Furthermore, this course will explore topics such as regional, social, and cultural variations in language. Gain an understanding of language processes in an objective, analytical, and unbiased manner. Develop a working knowledge of the structure of the english language, including speech sounds, sound patterns, morphemes, phrases, clauses, and sentences. Gain an understanding of the various functions of language. Demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomical and neurological bases of speech and language production, as well as several neurological language disorders. Develop an unbiased view of different languages and cultures, various social and geographical dialects, and bilingualism.
