This course introduces you to the basic concepts of linguistics and subtopics of language study including: theory, acquisition, neural mechanisms, disorders, language modalities, culture, and history. We will explore the fundamentals of language, including origin, use, and distinguishing language and communication. We will delve into the structure of language with topics including: phonology, morphology, pragmatics, semantics, and syntax. Furthermore, this course will explore regional, social, and cultural variations in language. Gain an understanding of language processes in an objective, analytical, and unbiased manner. Develop working knowledge of the structure of the english language, including speech sounds, sound patterns, morphemes, phrases, clauses, and sentences. Develop an understanding of the various functions of language. Demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomical and neurological bases of speech and language production, as well as several neurological language disorders. Develop an unbiased view of different languages and cultures, various social and geographical dialects, and bilingualism.
