Document Summary

Took willow tree and planted in dry soil. Took track of it for 5 years. Photosynthesis: biochemical process for building carbs using energy from sun and co2 from air. Ocean is responsible for huge part -- phytoplankton. Co2 + h20 glucose and o2. Use atp and nadph in calvin cycle makes carbohydrates. The oxygen released from photosynthesis comes from water. Location: thylakoid membranes -- third layer of membrane inside chloroplast. In lab: light excites electrons releases heat or fluorescence to return to ground-state. In cell: light excites electrons electrons passed to next chlorophyll molecules. Funnel it down to get to reaction centers: when it arrives, the electron gets handed off to start etc, reaction center grabs electron from electron donor (water) to replace electron. Energy pumps protons: handed off to nadp+ Chlorophyll: hydrocarbon side chain, and light-absorbing region, head = porphyrin ring - absorbs light, carotenoids = accessory pigments, carbon fixation.
