Document Summary

Community = all the species that interact in a certain area. Tness = ability to survive and produce viable offspring. There are many interactions that take place between different species. Sometimes, a certain species"s population survival may be tightly linked to the survival of another population. Four general types of interactions: 1. commensalism = when one species bene ts and the other one is unaffected, 2. competition = when both individuals consume the same resources. Lowers the tness for both: 3. consumption = when one organism eats another. Increases tness of the consumer but lowers for the victim: 4. mutualism = when both species interact in a way that both bene t and raise in tness. Three key themes to species interactions: 1. species interactions can affect the abundance and distribution of a particular species. Can impact population size and population spread: 2. species act as agents of natural selection when they interact.
