Other Research Terminology
- Basic research: research with no immediate application.
- Applied research: done with a specific question or application in mind.
- Field research: research conducted where people actually live, work, and play.
- Laboratory research: this allows the researcher to have greater control over the
research.
Characteristics of Good Research
- Regardless of the type of research or the specific research design utilized, there are
some common, and generally agreed upon, characteristics of good research.
- A review of existing related literature is always a part of good research.
o Failure to review the literature can result in repeating work that has already
been accomplished or remaking mistakes that have already been made.
- Research is used to refine and substantiate theory, and theory is used to spawn
additional research.
- Good research is apolitical, unbiased, and objective.
- Research always starts with a question that needs to be answered or a problem that
needs to be explored.
- For research to be considered good research, it must be designed in such a way that it
can be replicated and validated.
- Good quantitative research can be generalized to other settings.
- Research is only as good as the accuracy of its observations and measurements
- All measurements instruments used in research must be valid and reliable.
o Valid: the instrument measures what it is supposed to measure
o Reliable: the instrument is consistent in its measurement over time.
- Research requires patient, unhurried activity.
- Data must be thoroughly and rigorously analyzed before results can be presented.
- Once a research project is completed, it is important that the results be shared with the
wider health education community.
Characteristics of Good Researchers
- First and foremost, good researchers are inquisitive.
o Researchers are constantly asking questions and seeking to answer those
questions through the research process.
- Good researchers must have patience and work in a deliberate and unhurried fashion.
o It takes time to carefully plan and conduct research.
- Good researchers are also preserving and determined.
- Good researchers must be systemic and logical, because research is a systemic and
logical process.
o Each step in the research process must be thoroughly completed before the next
step can begin.
- Researchers are doubters and skeptics.
o As researchers read the works of other researchers, they should be critical, raise
doubts, and ask questions about the work.
