- Literature review: a synthesis of the literature on a topic.

Why do a Literature Review?
- In a qualitative research, the literature serves a different purpose than in quantitative
research.
- The literature may be mentioned at the beginning of a qualitative study to help justify

- There are many more reasons for doing a thorough literature review.
o It provides a historical structure for a given research area.
o A solid literature review will help ensure that one does not unintentionally
repeat work that has already been done.
o The literature can also be utilized to justify the importance of a particular study.
- Practical significance: refers to how those practically practicing in the profession will
benefit from a given work, a study may produce statistically significant results but lack
practical significance.
- Developing an understanding of and grounding in theory is a critical aspect of the
literature review.
- The literature review can also reveal studies closely related to the proposed study.
Validity of Health Information
- In reviewing the health literature, it is especially important to determine the validity of
the sources being used.
- One guideline that can be used to determine the validity of health information is where
it is published.
o Referred journals: one that only publishes articles that have been reviewed and
accepted by an independent panel of reviewers or referees made up of
individuals in the same or closely related profession.

o Most good articles contain citations or sources utilized in the body of the article
and a reference list at the end of the article.
o The style of presentation is another clue that can be used to determine the
validity of the information.
o Articles that contain advertisement or personal testimonies should usually be
avoided in a literature review.
