Suicide ideation: thoughts and intentions of killing oneself; associated with a sense of hopelessness, helplessness, and despair. Suicide attempts: involves self-injury intended to cause death but do not lead to; not always reported. Suicide gestures: self-injury in which there is no intent to die; communication means. Suicide: behaviours intended to cause death and death actually occurs. A history of prior attempts is the strongest correlate of 12-month attempts. History or multiple physical and sexual assaults. People who discuss suicide will not commit the act (most do discuss it) Suicide is committed without warning (warnings usually given) Suicidal people clearly want to die (most are ambivalent about their own death) The motives for suicide are easily established (not fully understood why people do it) All who commit suicide are depressed (many are not)
