Believed that more than half of those who try to kill themselves are depressed and despondent at the time of the act. Estimated that 15% of people who have been diagnosed with mdd ultimately commit suicide. Weight/appetite loss insomnia (immediate indicator of suicide risk) Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt thoughts of death or suicidal ideation. Comorbid anxiety disorders (especially panic, gad, anxiety disorder not otherwise speci ed) also increase risk of suicide death among depressed individuals. Hopelessness predicted suicidal behaviour during depressive phases. Severity of depression and younger age predicted suicide attempts during mixed phases. Females who perceived themselves as rejected or neglected by either parent in childhood were more likely to make a lifetime suicide attempt. Many people who are not depressed make suicidal attempts. Most notably people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Presence of negative mood intensity and mood variability appears to de ne a subgroupof borderline individuals at elevated risk for suicidal behaviour.
