Document Summary

Species- natural populations of organisms that can interbreed and are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Biological species concept- a definition of species described as populations of organisms that interbreed, or could possibly interbreed, with each other under natural conditions and that cannot interbreed with organisms outside their own group. Prezygotic barrier- a barrier to reproduction caused by the physical inability of individuals to mate with each other, or the inability of the male"s reproductive cell to fertilize the female"s reproductive cell. Postzygotic barrier- a barrier to reproduction caused by the infertility of hybrid individuals or the inability of hybrid individuals to survive long after fertilization. Hybrid- offspring"s of individuals of two different species. Two key features of the biological species concept: actually interbreeding or could possibly interbreed. This emphasis means that just because two individuals are physically separated, they aren"t necessarily of different species.
