Photosynthesis: overview (page 184, photosynthesis- the conversion of sun into chemical energy that is stored in sugar and other organic molecules, autotrophs- producers or self feeders, they sustain themselves without eating anything derived from other living beings. They produce their organic molecules from co2 and other inorganic raw materials derived from the environment: heterotrophs- consumers that obtain their organic material by the second major mode of nutrition, they live on compounds produced by other organisms. Thus it absorbs slightly different wavelengths and chlorophyll b appears as olive green while chlorophyll a is blue green: carotenoids- hydrocarbons that are various shades of yellow and orange because they absorb violet and blue-green light. Ps ii, boosting one of its electrons to a higher energy level. As the electron falls back to its ground state, an electron in a nearby pigment molecule is simultaneously raised to an excited state.
