CHEM 101L Chapter Notes - Chapter 4.2: Chemical Formula, Cyclopropane, Alkyne
Document Summary
Our first classification of organic compounds are alkanes: Alkanes are a specially classified group of organic compounds that carry straight chains of hydrocarbons (and by straight i mean that they do not round up together t make a ring structure). All alkane groups have ch3 attached to their ends and do not form ring structures and usually only form linear structures with some exceptions. The naming of such alkane groups is usually pretty simple, those that share a simple linear structure with only alkanes (ch3) at the ends are named based on prefixes. If there are 6 carbons and 14 hydrogens, it is called hexane. These simple alkane compounds have a certain amount of carbon and [(2x. Next in out classification are the ethyl groups. Ethyl groups are often referred to as the aromatic groups since they often release some sort of aromatic scent and contain an ethyl in their compound (ethyl molecule: c2h5).
