PSY 005 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Stereotype Threat, Thought Suppression, Test Anxiety
Document Summary
The apprehension experienced by members of a minority group that they might behave in a manner that confirms an existing cultural stereotype. White student"s performance was not affected by the description of the test performed as well as white students. Black students who believed the test was non-diagnostic of their abilities. But the black students who thought that the test was measuring their abilities didn"t perform as well as white students or as well as the black students in the other group. If race is made more salient, the decrement in performance among black students is even more pronounced. But when women were told that the same test had nothing to do w male-female differences, they performed just as well as men. Those who were reminded of their gender (stereotype: women that are poor at math) performed worse on the test than women who were reminded of their cultural identity (stereotype: asians are good at math)
