Document Summary

Terminal inverted repeats: marks where the elements end. Staggered breaks made in dna where the transposon is about to paste in. Transposable elements = join to the single strand dna. Dna is replicated at the gaps left after the te is pasted in order to repair. Ac elements: transposable elements that move by thereself. Transposase: makes staggered cuts in chromosomal dna where the element inserts itself. If ac is near ds then transposase acts on both of them. Insertion sequences: move from one location to another. Cell function hypothesis: transposable elements serve function in cell. Selfish dna hypothesis: the transposable element serves no purpose. Transposable elements insert in the gene and disrupt gene function. During recombination instead of grabbing onto the sister chromatid, the chromatid may grab onto itself at the repetitive sequences of the transposon. Usually transposons move to sections of the genome where they don"t interfere with genes.
