34 views4 pages

Document Summary

There"s patients with r hemisphere damage, unaware the entire l side of body is paralyzed even thou they"re mentally lucid. Directly confronting patient by asking him to respond verbally (can you touch my nose with your left hand?) Somatoparaphrenia = denial of ownership of one"s own body part. Freudian view = patient doesn"t wanna confront unpleasantness of their paralysis. Problem: doesn"t explain difference in magnitude of psychological defense mechanisms b/w patients with anosognosia and what"s seen in normal ppl. Neurological view (opposite of freudian view) = denial is a direct consequence of neglect syndrome, general indifference to everything on left side of world. ^ happens after r hemisphere damage and leaves patients same (indiff) to everything that goes on within l side of world. Problem: neglect and denial can happen independently. Neglect doesn"t account for why denial persists even when patients. Correct way to approach problem, ask attention is drawn to paralysis.
