The collections of roles we play form our self identities. People feel their roles rather than thinking about them. People interpret situations through the subjective lens of their own perception: changing the definition of a situation can be difficult but can also have momentous results. I. e ending slavery, the civil rights movement / ending the jim crow era: if i only has a brain :the importance of social recognition, as the social messages that define people change, they themselves change. As we become socialized we absorb the ideas that we think the people around us possess. Ideologies unite people they come about to benefit society or at least certain people in society. Sociology of knowledge- understand the society that created certain ideologies.
