Chapter 6 New Media
• Copyright - issues arising with the emergence of ‘free content’
• New media challenges the gatekeeping role of traditional media
o Editorial intervention and validation of authorship - not available in several
internet publications.
• Differentiating new media from old media:
o Interactivity: indicated by ratio or response from the user to the source.
o Social presence (sociability): experienced by user, sense of personal contact with
others.
o Media richness: extent to which media can bridge different frames of reference,
reduce ambiguity, involve more senses and be more personal.
o Autonomy: degree to which user feels in control of the use and content,
independent of the source.
o Playfulness: uses for entertainment and enjoyment, as opposed to utility.
o Privacy: associated with use of the medium and its content.
o Personalization: degree to which the content and the uses are personalized to the
consumer.
