Hall excerpt work of representation pages 5-24, 53. Visual images and signs when bearing a close resemblance to things they refer, are still signs: carry meaning and have to be interpreted. To interpret requires conceptual map which correlates sheep in field with concept of a sheep and a language system which in visual language, bears some resemblance to the real thing or looks like it in some way. Visual signs iconic and spoken signs indexical. Relationship in these systems of representation between the sign, concept and object to which they might refer is entirely arbitrary. We fix meanings for a while and then it seems natural. Reflective approach: meaning is thought to be in the object, person, idea or event in the real world. Language works by reflecting already fixed in the world is known as mimetic. Intentional approach: author or speaker imposes their unique meaning on the world through language (words mean what the author intends they should mean)
