Document Summary

Lab #4 | the urinary system & kidneys. The left kidney may sit a little higher than the right kidney because there is a large liver above the right kidney. During development the right and left kidneys ascend, and the right kidney"s ascent may be stopped by the large liver superior to it. The kidneys are enclosed within a renal capsule // provides structural support and protection. Deep to the renal capsule is the renal cortex // where blood filtration occurs. The renal medulla // the innermost layer of the kidney. It contains around ~7 8 cone-shaped renal pyramids that transport urine from the cortex to the calyces. The renal columns are an extension of the cortex that separate the renal pyramids and provide structural support. The renal pelvis collects all the urine and transports it to the urinary bladder via the ureter. The renal hilum is the area where the blood vessels and ureter are located.
