Document Summary

Ecology study of relationships between organisms and their environments. Abiotic non-living parts of the environment: climate, availability of nutrients. Biotic living parts of the environment: competitors, predators and prey. Population group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area. Populations adapt to their specific environment through natural selection. Key features of a population: size number of individuals, range area that the population lives in, density number of individuals in a certain area. Types of distributions: random no clear pattern, clustered groups around areas that have more resources, uniform there is a clear pattern to how the individuals are spaced out. Density may be misleading depending on the distribution pattern. Factors affecting population size: births and deaths, emigration and immigration. Exponential growth pattern that occurs when population growth rate is constant. Intrinsic growth rate growth rate that occurs when there are no environmental factors to limit growth.
