Document Summary

Life must be able to reproduce to survive. Two modes of reproduction: asexual one organism produces offspring that are genetically identical to itself. Budding bud forms and breaks off to create another, smaller individual. Fragmentation organism splits into pieces that regrow into multiple organisms. Binary fission form of cell division used for reproduction in bacteria and archaeons. Parthenogenesis non-fertilized egg develops into a new individual: sexual dna from two individuals combines to make a new unique individual. Asexual reproduction: produces more offspring rapidly, most beneficial when resources are abundant, makes reproduction possible in low population density, very little genetic diversity is introduced. Get rid of harmful mutations more quickly. Fertilization: external gametes are released into environment (surrounding water) Lots of gametes are produced to ensure fertilization and because few survive. Or release gametes very close together: internal occurs in female parent.
