Document Summary

In section sq1 towards the beginning of the book, these three key factors are what make communicating challenging: communication can be a complex process, it is affected by context, and it is more than just a transmission of messages. Throughout the first point, one can see that a communicator must find a medium in which to send the message while also encoding it for the receiver. The receiver will decode the message to the best of their ability. Unfortunately, there are barriers all throughout communication that prevent us from understanding, hearing, or even communicating with the other party. It is also important that the receiver sends feedback to continue the process of communication. In the second point, communication can be taken out of context if misinterpreted by the receiver. The first party might not have meant it in the same way someone else received the message. There is always the factor of cultural context as well.
