CSD-2259 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13.5: Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Cochlear Implant, Hearing Aid
Document Summary
How is pediatric hearing loss treated in evidence based practice: communication choices. The overarching goal of all interventions for pediatric hearing loss is the development of healthy, socially, and emotionally balanced individuals who are able to integrate fully into society and lead productive lives. Consideration of self concept of identity is particularly relevant in discussions of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The importance of parental orientation lies in the fact that children are not taught speech and language; rather, they learn the language in which they are immersed through incidental learning and exposure. To develop oral speech and language, these children will need significant and intensive amounts of intervention, the extent of which will be strongly influenced by their age at identification and treatment. Children who are treated early with hearing aids or cochlear implantation are more likely to take advantage of auditory neuroplasticity.
