The human auditory system is responsible for detecting, categorizing, and comprehending sounds. Hearing links us to the world around us. Variability in the location of damage to hearing structures. Whether it affects both ears (bilateral hearing loss) or just one ear (unilateral hearing loss) Extent to which hearing acuity is impacted. Variability in chronicity: how long it is present. Congenital / developmental hearing loss: present at birth. Prelingual hearing loss: occurs soon after birth but before a child has developed language: also includes all types of congenital loss. Postlingual hearing loss: occurs in later childhood or adolescence after language skills are well established. Hearing loss: emphasis on the decrease in hearing acuity that is the hallmark of this condition: often referred to as: Imply abnormality of the auditory system or hearing function and indicate the impact of the loss on a person"s life.
