Michael sandel explains through this chapter that the free market rests on two claims, welfare and freedom. The market allows us to freely trade with one another and welfare makes both parties happy in the end because of the trade. Sandel states that the market sometimes violates welfare and freedom and it is not always for the greater good of the society - it can be corrupted. There are three ways of going about drafting soldiers. Conscription, conscription with paid substitutes and the market system. Conscription means you have to go to war or you have to pay a fee of . Libertarianism"s argued that it is a form of slavery. Paying the fee can indicate that the government owns your life. Utilitarianism"s argue that it limits peoples choices and this will reduces their overall happiness. The way i look at it, it is a form of slavery, nobody should be forced to go to war.
