Powerful people and groups can compel obedience among members who would have otherwise resisted the group"s wishes. Obedience situation: the participant had to administer increasingly more severe shocks to a confederate for every mistake they made in remembering paired words. The demands/prods: when the voltage became too high, the teacher (participant) began to protest continuation of shock delivery: the experimenter would use a sequence of prods. The participants would not challenge the experimenter"s demands before the 300v level or check on the learner when he failed to answer (but they always buckled under the pressure of the experimenter"s power to continue) Voice feedback condition: harm vs. rights: obedience dropped to 20% when the confederate lled the role of the authority (rather than the experimenter) Group e ects: obedience rather than conformity since the authority did not himself engage in the action he demanded.
