Document Summary

Chapter 6 episodic memory: organizing and remembering. Organization is used to (cid:498)catalog(cid:499) our experiences so as to make them accessible when we need to remember them. Such events might then accumulate and consolidate to form the basis of semantic memory. Impaired episodic memory in amnesiacs is generally associated with impaired knowledge acquisition, the capacity to continue to develop knowledge of the world. Ex: learning and retention of material from a psychology course; testing after a short delay, much of the information recalled as episodes. But when tested several months later, the information has become separated from recollection of the learning events and become incorporated into the semantic memory. Criticized ebbinghaus for throwing out the most important and interesting aspect of human memory; chose to study the recall of complex material, such as drawings and folk tales(e. g. , the war of the ghosts) from unfamiliar cultures.
