Document Summary

10 november 13: how health psychologists assist hospitalized patients. Number of psychologists working in hospitals has expanded greatly. In hospital settings, psychologists: consult with patients" specialists, asses clients" needs for and provide psychological preparation, help patients adhere to medication and treatment, provide behavioural programs, and assist in rehabilitation processes: initial steps in healing. Patients who need psychological help generally don"t request it themselves. The psychologist consults the person who made the request, often the physician or nurse, and reviews the client"s medical record. The next step is interviewing the patient and/or relevant family: tests for psychological assessment of medical patients. Psychologists decide on a set of tests to administer based on the type of illness or problem the client seems to have. Psychological characteristics that are common among people with cardiovascular disease are depression, pessimism, anxiety, and sense of personal control. Psychologists use two approaches in assessing emotional adjustment: diagnostic interviews and questionnaires.
