Ch. 1 september 10th: health psychology, the profession. Health psychologists help the patient"s psychological adjustment to, and management, of, health problems. Health psychologists with clinical training can provide therapy for emotional and social adjustment problems that being ill or disabled can produce. Health psychologists research provides information about lifestyle and personality factors in illness and injury which can also educate health professionals toward understanding psychosocial needs of patients. The qualifications for becoming a health psychologist: a doctoral degree in psychology with concentrated training in various aspects of health, illness, and medical care: current perspectives on health and illness, the biopsychosocial perspective. Biopsychosocial model: expands the biomedical view by adding to biological factors connections to psychological and social factors. All factors affect and are affected by the person"s health. Biological factors: genetic materials and processes by which we inherit characteristics from our parents. It also includes the function and structure of the person"s physiology. Psychological factors: focus on cognition, emotion, and motivation.
