What is a psychological disorder: a psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected which is beyond the control of the person. Define abnormal behaviour use 5 criteria: statistically rare, distress (to self or others, dysfunction, deviance (from social norms, danger (increases risk to self or others) And if the severe fear happens on every date, your emotions are not functioning properly. Impairment also occurs but is not entirely true: eg- being so shy you avoid interaction even though you want to have friends then your social functioning is impaired. Is the behavior beyond the individuals control?- widiger with present distress and impairment in functioning or increased risk of suffering, death, pain or impairment- The scientist/ practitioner: health professionals who take a scientific approach to their clinical work and are therefore referred to as scientist-practitioners.
