Document Summary
Abnormal psychology - chapter 1 - abnormal behaviour in historical context. Psychological disorder - a internal dysfunction that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typically or culturally accepted. Breakdown of cognitive, emotional, or behavioural functioning. Exists of a continuum and are not just present or absent- symptoms can be mild or severe. Feeling scared, avoiding a situation, faitining etc it depends on the person and situation. Not all disorders require distress - some disorders make an individual elated and energetic. Also distress is very common so it can"t be considered abnormal in itself. Becomes abnormal when there"s an extreme expression of normal. Impairment can also mean being shy or lazy but that"s not abnormal emotions/behaviours/cognitive processes. Phobia - a psychological disorder which is marked by a persistent fear of an object or situation.
