Document Summary

Purpose of brain to control movements, reason why few species have them. Smooth muscles: those that control the digestive system + other organs. Skeletal/striated muscles: control movements in body in relation to the environment. Each muscle fiber receives info from one axon, any axon can innervate more than one muscle fiber. Neuromuscular junction: synapse between motor neuron + muscle fiber. Antagonistic muscles: opposing sets of muscles required for moving muscle back + forth. Extensor: muscle that extends/straightens a limb fast-twitch fibers: fast contractions + rapid fatigue. Are anaerobic: does not require oxygen, but requires for recovery slow-twitch fibers: less vigorous contractions + no fatigue. We can talk to people without tiring lips. Proprioceptor: receptor that detects position or movement of a body part. Stretch reflex: when a muscle is stretched, spinal cord sends a signal to contract it reflexively. Muscle spindle: one kind of proprioceptor, parallel to muscle that respond to a stretch.
