PSYC 2P35 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Putamen, Posterior Parietal Cortex, Thalamus
Document Summary
Smooth muscles: control the digestive system and other organs. Skeletal/striated muscles: control movement of the body in relation to the environment. Cardiac muscles: heart muscles, which have properties intermediate between those of smooth and skeletal muscles. Neuromuscular junction: a synapse between a motor neuron axon and a muscle fiber. Antagonistic muscles: opposing sets of muscles that are required to move a leg or arm back and forth. Fast-twitch fibers: muscle type with fast contractions and rapid fatigue. Slow-twitch fibers: muscle types with less vigorous contractions and no fatigue. Anaerobic: using reactions that do not require oxygen at the time but need oxygen for recovery. Proprioceptor: a receptor that detects the position or movement of a part of the body. Muscle spindle: a receptor parallel to the muscle that responds to a stretch. Golgi tendon organs: respond to increases in muscle tension. Ballistic movement: is executed as a whole; once initiated, it can"t be altered.
