Document Summary

Chapter 2 nerve cells (neurons and gilia cells) and nerve impulses. Neurons receive info and transmit it to other cells 100 billion neurons approx. Sodium is positively charged and the inside of a cell is negatively charged. Cell body or soma contains the nucleus, ribosomes, and mitochondria: also covered with synapses. Axon thin fiber of constant diameter, usually longer than dendrites: neurons info sender, many axons are covered in myelin sheath insulating material that sends info better and faster with interruptions known as nodes of ranvier. Invertebrate axons do not have sheath: presynaptic terminal at the end of an axon; where axon releases chemicals that cross through the gap between one neuron and the next, neurons can ony have one axon. Motor neuron its soma is in the spinal cord; receives excitation from other neurons through its dendrites and conducts impulses along its axon to a muscle.
