Darwin"s principles of emotion: believed both emotions and their expressions are innate, 3 principles for understanding the expression of emotion in both human in animals. Serviceable associated habits: the ways in which organisms express emotion have had survival value in the past, emotional expression were originally learned but had become innate over many generations. Antithesis: the expression of opposite emotions involves opposite kinds of behaviour, behaviour associated with opposite kinds of feelings are often expressed in opposite kinds of behaviour. Direct action of the nervous system: some emotional expression occur simply because of changes in nervous system activity, recognition of emotional states. We recognize certain behaviours as indicating that an individual is in a particular emotional state and we can alter our behaviour accordingly. James lange theory: sequence of events triggering arousal and subsequent behaviour. Perception bodily changes emotion behaviour. Bodily changes could be completely eliminated without disturbing the emotions of an organism.
