PSYC 2230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex, Autonomic Nervous System, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Darwin believed both emotions and their expressions are innate. He proposed three principles for understanding the expression of emotion in both human and animals: serviceable associated habits, antithesis, direct action of the nervous system. The way in which organisms express emotions have had survival value in the past. Emotional expression was originally learned but had become innate over many generations. The expression of opposite emotions involves opposite kinds of behavior. Behavior associated with opposite kinds of feelings are often expressed in opposite kinds of behavior. Some emotional expression occurs simply because of changes in the nervous system. We recognize certain behaviors as indicating that an individual is in a particular emotional state and we can alter our behavior accordingly. Sequence of events triggering arousal and subsequent behavior: perception bodily changes emotion behavior, snarling dog heart rate increases fear run away.
