Chapter one - conceptualizing and measuring motivation and the role of evolution in. We know what it feels like to be motivated. We often talk about our motives as wants, needs, drives, or desires learned factors play an important role in the development of many motives the way we interpret events around us will influence our motives. Many motives appear to result from a combination of biology, learning, and cognition. Motivation is the concept we use when we describe the forces acting on or within an organism to initiate and direct behaviour. Use concept of m to explain differences in the intensity of behaviour. More intense behaviours are considered to be the result of higher levels of m. Use the concept of m to indicate the persistence of behaviour. Highly motivated behaviour will often be persistent (even though intensity is low) Concept of m helps to explain why behaviour occurs in one situation but not in others.
