Neurosis: part 1 chapter 15: what is abnormal: criteria, distress is present. Person is suffering, unhappy, experiencing emotional pain, inner sense of being upset: behaviour is maladaptive. Impaired functioning, relationships are impaired, somehow can"t relate to other people, always getting into arguments and conflicts, cannot realize they"re crazy: socially deviant. Behaviour is unusual, not normal , afraid, falls out of the normal, pattern of obsessive behaviours. Medical model: psychologists still use this, and is useful to understand what mental disorders were=disease, mental disorders were believed to be a possession by demon=therefore treatment was harsh. Simplify and create order:bring into clusters and groups=clear idea of what the disorder is. Plan treatment-if research has been done, can figure out what the therapies/antecedents that will be helpful for people: what is the dividing line between normal and abnormal behaviour. Deviation from statistical average= when behaviour falls from the norm/deviation from the norm, it is considered abnormal.
