Document Summary

Psychoanalytic perspective: cognitivists tells us that the singlemost strength human beings have is the ability to think through their problems. Human beings will learn to conquer their own fears, if they actually understand what their problem is. From the congnitivist perspective, what has happened is catastrophizing taking something small and insequential and making a big deal out of it. The cognitivist theory can be reduced to: 1) stop 2) think. Stop is about putting an end to the flight of ideas, and thinking about what is so bad and what you can do. The big problem is broken down to a bunch of smaller problems, and dealing with them. The idea that you can use human intellect to reason and conquer anxiety. This involves an incredible amount of time and work to walk someone through a cognitivist therapy. The idea here is that conditions like anxiety and lots of behaviors can be thought through rather than medicated.
