A person won"t make a decision until a pattern is identified which makes the decision maker comfortable enough to act. Decision-making phase: first part of problem solving process. Develop alternative solutions to problem and evaluate feasibility: choice: Programmed decision: using a rule, procedure, or quantitative method: uses traditional/historic information, for situations that are routine. Nonprogrammed decision: deals with unusual or uncommon situations: for situations that are hard to quantify/ are unique. Optimization model: finding best solution: uses problem constraints (limit on # of available work hours at a factory for ex, looks at all alternatives, optimization software: solver for ex. Satisficing model: finding a good solution, but not the best: used when optimization is too difficult or costly, looks at only alternatives likely to give good results. Heuristics: aka rules of thumb: ex: when inventory drops to <20, order 4 months of inventory supply.
