Shem is one of three sons of noah (builder of ark that survived the great flood send by god to destroy creation) When was torah written down: traditional jews believe that torah was revealed to moses ( leader of israelites) at mount sinai. & written down by him as a single document: scholars argue that torah is a composite text, comprising various documents composes at different times by human beings, documentary hypothesis: proposed in 1883 by julius wellhausen. Moses consist of material from 4 different authors. This hypothesis has powerful influence & widely accepted: second book of torah, exodus, tells how moses led the israelites out of slavery in egypt & eventually to promised land of canaan. Moses with help, in form of 10 horrible plagues, convinced egyptian pharaoh to liberate the enslaved israelites & let them leave egypt: some scholar suggests book writer as early as 13th century bce.
